This position develops and implements environmental restoration programs to enable achievement of DEN’s long-term strategic objectives including protecting the environment, preventing pollution, and systematically and proactively managing environmental risks. This position administers DEN’s program to address historic uses and releases of AFFF containing PFAS, petroleum storage tank requirements, and spill prevention and response activities.  Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develops and implements DEN’s program to address historic uses and releases of AFFF containing per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including DEN’s PFAS voluntary cleanup actions
  • Provides recommendations on the contracting approach to engage consultant and contractor support to implement DEN’s PFAS voluntary cleanup actions, including project sequencing and phasing, budget level estimates, and proposed numbers of contracts, durations, and award amounts.  Manages the contracting process including development of contract scopes of work and requests for proposals, administers execution of contracting elements, monitors contract performance, and critically reviews and corrects work products of consultants and contractors.  Tracks financial operations and promotes completion of work within budget limits.  Identifies and recommends new sources of revenue to address historic PFAS releases including grant opportunities
  • Designs and completes activities conducted to meet EPA SPCC and Colorado Department of Labor and Employment Division of Oil and Public Safety (OPS) petroleum storage tank requirements for tanks owned and operated by DEN, including system registration, operator training, compliance inspections, and release detection, identification, reporting, and response
  • Serves as a SME on environmental requirements that apply to petroleum storage tanks operated by DEN business partners and acts to influence compliance and positive environmental outcomes related to their operation of tanks and the DEN jet fuel hydrant system
  • Develops business processes and procedures to identify and respond to spills and releases on DEN property.  Collaborates with other Divisions regarding spill and release response including airport operations, maintenance, finance, and airline affairs.  Leads the environmental sustainability team on spill and release response including designing on-call rotations, training others, and serving as a SME on reporting and release response actions.  Covers on-call shifts as part of the on-call rotation
  • Tracks and interprets legal requirements that DEN must comply with and provides recommendations on other requirements that DEN chooses to comply with for environmental protection and restoration
  • Facilitates and coordinates program implementation with numerous and diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Performs lead work communicating PFAS restoration strategies to other members of the team, guiding the team towards programmatic targets, and coordinating multi faced aspects of program
  • implementation, such as those that cross with the water and waste management teams within environmental sustainability
  • Contributes expertise to DEN’s sustainability and environmental programs including an Environmental Management System (EMS) that is certified to ISO Standard 14001:2105. Other duties as assigned

About You

We are looking for candidates with some or all the following skills and experience

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Hydrogeology, or a related field.
  • Significant regulatory and scientific expertise with environmental cleanup and restoration, including PFAS
  • Demonstrated ability to apply multi-disciplinary scientific principles to address environmental contamination, such as use and release mechanisms, site characterization, pollutant fate and transport, human and ecological effects, risk assessment, engineered controls, remediation, and risk communication
  • Direct experience with legal and other requirements applicable to the position, such as FAA standards on the use of aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) at Part 139 certified airports, CDPHE Environmental Cleanup Guidance and Policy, Colorado’s Voluntary Cleanup and Redevelopment Program, CDPHE Environmental Spill and Release Reporting, EPA SPCC requirements, and OPS petroleum storage tank requirements
  • Working knowledge of the state, and evolution of, scientific and policy aspects of PFAS, including chemical properties, analytical methods, monitoring and characterization, exposure assessment, treatment, disposal and related regulations, advisories, and guidance
  • Experience recommending program objectives, developing and modifying work plans, resolving complex problems, and leveraging support when needed so programs operate in conformance with established standards and requirements
  • A proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships, function in various roles across large and diverse teams, and direct and leverage the work of other staff, consultants, and contractors to deliver positive environmental outcomes
  • A readiness to strengthen a positive and respectful organizational culture

  • Results-oriented, self-driven to contribute to a high performing team
  • Experience adapting to setbacks and changes in work assignments and ways of doing work

  • Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Environmental Science, or a related field based on a specific position
  • Experience:  Three (3) years of professional experience conducting scientific research and/or analysis on a variety of environmental or public health issues as required by the specific duties assigned to the position
  • Education and Experience:  One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements

FBI Background Check: FBI criminal background check is required for all positions at Denver International Airport (DEN). Employees are also required to report any felony convictions and/or moving violations to maintain this clearance and be eligible for continued employment. By position, a pre-employment physical/drug test may be required.

Snow / Emergency Duties: Denver International Airport is a 24/7/365 team operation. If weather conditions warrant or an emergency crisis occurs, all DEN employees can be required to work extended hours and/or shifts.
